Southgate Weld Tennis Project |
YOFE has contributed immensely to the Walker Ground - Southgate Weld Tennis Project (Phase 1) recently.
The TENNIS facilities for Youth in Enfield (13-19 years) have received additional funding to provide new court surfaces (4 tennis courts) and a wonderful practise board.
These will be used in particular to encourage more young persons into the playing of tennis, in particular, promotional courses will be made available for local deaf / partial hearing juniors who recently benefitted from squash coaching courses at Southgate Squash & Racketball Club (also part of the Walker Ground).
The improved facilities will also be used for the promotion of netball (lines overlaying those of the tennis courts) – targeted for young sports players. The Walker Ground is planning to celebrate with a netball rally.
The court surfaces faced a delay in full use due to the recent heatwave, which started to melt the recently laid tarmac and shoes were sticking.
Future phases of developments in mind are floodlights (subject to planning permission) and astro / carpet surfacing (both subject to finances).
The complete Walker Ground – Southgate Weld Tennis Project would also like to thank Palmers Green High School, Arthur Ashby Foundation, Asda, private donator, Lawn Tennis Association and members of the Weld Tennis club – as well as the Enfield Youth Opportunities Fund team (YOFE – Pink Ross and her enthusiastic young team).
Please visit www.thewalkerground.co.uk for further details of all the sports and function facilities (membership and public hire).

"It is finally nice to see that work has begun to the land out back and now I can really see how much space we have to use. The other cadets and I are looking forward to doing things like lessons outside when the weather is good."
- Cadet A. Finch
"I am very happy to see that all the planning we have made has all paid off. This will allow us to make future plans that we would like to happen. I am glad to see that work has started and the unit project has begun to take shape."
- Able Cadet N. Robinson
"Am I pleased or what? After applying for the grant from the Youth Opportunity Fund to renovate the back part of Enfield Sea Cadet grounds, work has begun. With a group of volunteers from the cadets, who spent a couple of weekends clearing, chopping and slicing weeds - the main part of our developement project can start. I would like to thank the YOFE who made the work possible. Without the YOF funding we wouldnt have the chance to have cadets and other community members use the ground for social and training events."

"Whilst working with Voices of Central African Youth, I developed particular skills. I learnt how to work in a large group and developed leadership skills. I became more responsible (with money) because I learnt how to spend under a set budget and do so wisely. I also learnt how to bargain and find the best deals, as well as how to present my case before council officials and I’m currently working on playing a musical instrument – bass guitar."
- Michael K. - 17 years old
